IV Start RP Sample
IV start
Walks over to the cabinet and selects the IV skit with an 18 gauge needle. Turns walking back to the patient and sets the kit on the table. Carefully opens the kit glancing over at the patient "this might hurt a little." Lays the patients arm on the bed and opens the alcohol pad. Puts on gloves then takes the alcohol pad out of package and cleans the arm in the middle AC area. Grabs the tourniquet placing it on the upper arm tight, and with her index finger feels for a vein. Removes the cap of the IV needle and with her left hand hold down the patients arm, and with the right hand holding the IV needle with the tubing and a syringe attached at the end, it in place ready to insert "Okay on three you will feel a little stick, One, two three." Quickly inserts the needle into the skin toward the vein and pushes in until she sees blood return in the tubing. Hits the needles withdraw button, unties the tourniquet, then removes the needle leaving in the IV catheter. Flushes the IV quickly with a NS syringe then tapes it down to secure the IV.
